THRIVE: A Solution For Anxiety?

It’s no secret that I suffer with Agoraphobia and Panic Disorder. I’ve tried a cocktail of prescription medicines, CBT, self-help books, herbal remedies and more recently, meditation. I still battle with the effects of Anxiety and it affects me daily.

I want to introduce you to the Thrive: Feel Stress Free App, created by Dr Andres Fonseca and Dr Adam Huxley clinically proven to manage your mental health.

The idea behind this app is to prevent, detect and help manage common mental health problems, allowing the user to become more mindful, relaxed and in control of their own thoughts than before.

The theme of the app is a tropical Island. This seems a bit cliche but bear with it! As soon as you open the app you’re immediately greeted with the relaxing sounds of waves and sea sounds.

When you open the app, it takes you through a questionnaire called the ‘Mood Meter’ which gives you an indication of your current levels of depression and anxiety. The next page gives you advice and contact information for immediate access to mental health support (I think this is an absolutely fantastic feature to the app!)

There are 3 different “Islands”:

ZEN ISLAND

The purpose of the Zen Island is distraction. If, like me, you suffer with anxiety or panic attacks, you’ll probably already know that distraction is vital for staying in control of your own body.

This is the island where you can create your own ‘Zen Garden’ and decorate it with shells, sand features, star fish etc to promote mindfulness. There is also a mini game where you match the coloured buckets. They require no deep concentration but that’s the beauty of it, they’re just simple features to distract your mind when you’re in the throes of an anxiety attack.

RELAXATION ISLAND:

This Island is my “go to” one. There are several relaxation/meditation guides – all of which serve a different purpose.

My favourite is the Self Suggestion. It encourages you to think positively while meditating so you can zone into a relaxed state when you’re anxious.

The Deep Muscle technique is excellent too! It relieves tension throughout your body, encouraging you to tense and then relax each body part while controlling your breathing.

WELLBEING ISLAND:

This Island is filled with features for general wellbeing and positivity.

You can send and receive messages anonymously to other users who could do with an encouraging quote, track your progress, complete a mood meter and more!

Based on the answers you give during the mood meter, you can access tips and advice on how to combat your current worries.

Firstly, let me say that I have tried meditation via YouTube and honestly thought it was a load of old tripe. The first couple of times was fine but I started to feel a real plonker and my mind would wander so far that I’d often forget what the voice just told me to do and my breathing would go out of sync. I’d have to hold my breath for a few seconds and try to catch up with the instructions which would then cause me to lose the relaxed state and have to draw myself back in – defeating the whole purpose!

The Thrive app is just brilliant, and I’m not being paid to say this! These are all my genuine thoughts, see this email from last month that I sent to my PR contact!

Will I genuinely buy this app once my free trial is over? Without a shadow of a doubt I will. It’s worth every penny in my opinion. As cliche as it sounds, you can’t put a price on mental health and to have access to this kind of therapy at your fingertips whenever you need it, is a price worth paying.
